Road Name, Heritage Area Debate

Collingwood | by Catherine Thompson

Collingwood Council to decide whether controversial development is in heritage district.

Collingwood council will take another stab at renaming Highway 26 tonight.

After rejecting the name of Spirit Lake Road chosen by the public, council will now consider a new name that came up in discussions between Collingwood and Wasaga Beach.

The name incorporates both town names: Beachwood Road.

If the name is accepted by both communities, it still has to be approved by the Ministry of Transportation.

The new name is needed when the new highway 26 is done in 2013 and the current highway reverts back to a road shared by Collingwood and Wasaga Beach.

Also at tonight's meeting in Collingwood, council will discuss a request from the developer of the Admiral Collingwood Place project for a refund of the money he paid in lieu of not having enough parking spaces in a previous plan.

The developer is also asking that the property at the corner of Hume and Hurontario Streets be removed from the Heritage district.

Council will look at asking staff to review the process to do this and have them report back to council by October 31st.
