OMAFRA Help for Goderich

Goderich | by Rick Stow

OMAFRA may have a program to help Goderich recover from August tornado.

The Province of Ontario may have another program to help Goderich recover from the August tornado.

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is awaiting the naming of a minister to replace defeated Huron-Bruce member Carol Mitchell before kicking things into gear.

Vicki Luke, Revitalization Co-ordinator with OMAFRA, made a presentation to Town Council on how her ministry may be able to help.

OMAFRA's buzz-words for the plan -- which would assist business recovery -- are "common vision" and "putting order to revitalization."

Luke says the Ministry has had demonstrated success with its "PETTS", or Provincial Economic Transition Teams elsewhere.

These usually operate when an area has lost a major employer.

She told Council there are four lead ministries which join OMAFRA in the process, with other ministry teams added as needed.

The co-operation cuts the red tape between ministries and agencies involved.

Goderich may qualify as an "exceptional case", but nothing can move forward officially until a Minister is named.
