Rally for Michael Schmidt

Owen Sound | by Kevin Bernard

National Farmers Union organizes rally in support of Durham area raw milk producer.

Local farmers are rallying in support of Durham raw milk producer Michael Schmidt.

They will gather outside the Grey Bruce Health Unit office in Owen Sound on Thursday morning to show their opposition to what the government has been doing to Schmidt.

He has been battling with Queens park and the local health unit over the right to set up a "cow-sharing" agreement with clients who want unpasteurized milk.

Rally organizer Shawn McGivern, is also President of the Grey County National Farmers Union.

He says it's disgusting that a farmer can be criminalized for producing food and selling it.

McGivern says this is the first in what is a series of rallies in support of Schmidt.

He says one will be held at Queens Park, but the date hasn't been set.

Today's rally is from 10 AM until 11 AM at the health unit office in Owen Sound.
