Caps robbed at home
Walkerton starts season 0-3
Walkerton is still looking for its first win of the 2011-12 WOAA Senior AA hockey season.
The Capitals are now 0-3 after dropping two weekend contests, including a tight one at home Saturday night.
The Caps came back from a 5-2 third period deficit, but were stripped of the game winning goal with 2:38 to play. Adam Corbett evened the score with 1:24 remaining, and Curt Robinson scored on a partial breakaway less than a minute later to make it 6-5 Caps. The celebration was cut short, however, as officials waved off the go-ahead goal and sent Brady Houston to the penalty box for an interference call away from the play. The play, however, was not whistled down.
In any event, Shallow Lake’s Scott Luckhardt scored the game winner on the ensuing power play to lift the Shallow Lake Crushers to a 6-5 win and leave the Capitals with an 0-3 record.
Former Kincardine Bulldog Cole MacDougall opened the scoring for the Crushers, but Robinson notched his first of the season when he picked the top corner after breaking down the left wing. James Ireland and Corbett assisted on the tally. Shallow Lake took a 2-1 lead to the break after Jeremiah Henderson scored a power play marker late in the frame.
Tom Michi, Ian Barnard and Drew Wilson scored second period goals for Shallow Lake, with Michi’s coming on the man advantage. Robinson scored his second of the game on a power play to make it 5-2.
The third period was all Capitals, with Mike Huber and Andy Cline scoring less than a minute apart to cut the lead to one. Corbett’s game tying goal came on the power play from Cline and Shawn Bechtloff. Robinson’s hat trick was then denied, and Luckhardt scored the winner from Chris Robertson.
Trevor Van Wyck picked up the win in goal for Shallow Lake (1-0), while Adam Clark takes the loss for the Caps.
The previous night in Port Elgin, the Caps were badly outshot by the defending champions from Saugeen Shores. The Winterhawks took a 3-0 lead in the first period, and didn’t look back en route to a 6-2 win.
Blake Underwood had a hat trick for the hosts, who raised the Senior AA banner prior to this contest. Matt Turcotte, Darryl McKinnon and Shawn Walker each added a goal in the win. Chris Corbett and Brandon Fraser scored for Walkerton, who was outshot 45-23.
Jason Hamilton was very good in the Capitals crease, but suffered his second loss of the season. Josh Carolan picked up his first win of the year for Saugeen Shores.
The Capitals will be on the road for a pair of contests this weekend. Friday night, the team will be in Durham to take on the Thundercats. Saturday, Walkerton will visit the Lucknow Lancers. The next home game for the Caps is Friday, Oct. 21 when the Elora Rocks visit the county capital for an 8:30 p.m. start.
