At Odds Over Best Start Funding

Goderich | by Rick Stow

Huron County is asking that Goderich repay over 53 thousand dollars.

The Town of Goderich and the County of Huron are involved in a spat over the use of "Best Start Wage Improvement Funding."

The provincial program tops up wages for Early Childhood Educators, and is administered at County level.

Goderich used monies received under the program to boost wages of ECE staff from 2006 through 2009.

The municipality did not provide wage increases to the Early Childhood Educators it employs in 2010.

Huron County Social Services would like to see over 53 thousand dollars returned to County administration as a result.

Evy McDonagh, a manager with Huron County Social Services, suggests 10 thousand dollars received by Goderich under the Best Start program in 2011 may also be due if the municipality cannot prove the money has gone to ECE staff wages.
