Pumpkinfest Seed Spitting Champ

Port Elgin | by John Divinski

Captain Jack Sparrow Look-Alike hits 28-plus feet in seed spitting contest.

There's a new kid in town from the west coast and he's the new pumpkin seed-spitting champion.

Port Elgin's 25th edition of Pumpkinfest got underway Saturday morning and one of the highlights was area dignataries taking a shot at spitting a pumpkin seed as far as they could.

But your winner turned out to be the visiting Captain Jack Sparrow look-a-like who does indeed look like the Johnny Depp pirate character.

Sparrow spit 28-feet-10-inches.

Sparrow says he feels great about his spitting prowess.

He says he's thrilled to be visiting the Pumpkinfest celebrations and is impressed by all the people who have come out to visit.

The defending champion in the competition was Saugeen Shores Councillor Taun Frosst, who spit his pumpkin seed 20-feet-10-inches.

Frosst he was beaten by the pirate but plans to practice all year and will be back better than ever next year.

The councillor also says, tongue in cheek,  he believes Captain Jack had a slight advantage, suggesting the pirate was better lubed than others with a pirate's favourite drink--rum.

The big weigh-off is also underway and so far one of the heaviest pumpkins is well over one thousand pounds but word on the grounds is a grower from Quebec is bringing in a world-record two thousand pound gourd.

The world record is just over 18 hundred pounds.

Pumpkinfest continues for the rest of today and again tomorrow.
