Capitals open season Saturday

The new-look Walkerton Capitals will be on display Saturday night in Walkerton.
The Caps will kick off the 2011-12 WOAA Senior AA hockey season against the Ripley Wolves Saturday at 6:30 p.m. It’s the first chance to see some of the new talent acquired by Walkerton in the off-season.

After falling just short of its goal to make the AA playoffs last season, Walkerton acquired some of the best talent available from the Western Junior C Hockey League. Adam and Chris Corbett, twin brothers who were both First Team All-Stars last season, will debut as Caps on Friday night, as will Cory McDonald. McDonald was captain of the Wingham Ironmen last season, and will join Adam on an improved Walkerton blue line. Chris, meanwhile, finished second in Junior C scoring last year with 35 goals and 70 points for the Ironmen.

After a season as an assistant coach with Walkerton, Ryan Enright has been promoted to head coach. He’ll be behind the bench for Saturday night’s home opener. In addition to the Corbett twins and McDonald, he’ll also have former Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nathan Perrott at his disposal, as well as captain Andy Cline – who finished with 18 goals and 42 points in just 24 games last year.

Jason Hamilton, who stole a few points on his own last year for his teammates, will return between in goal, as will veteran puck stopper Adam Clark.
Brandon Fraser, Curt Robinson, Dave McIntosh, Luke Snider, Mitch Allen, Tim Dwinnell, Tyler McAfee, Brady Barfoot, Mike Huber, Shawn Betchloff, Jeff Barfoot, Greg Tiffin, Brady Houston, Josh Howald will also all return to the team. Several others have confirmed they will play for the Capitals, but have yet to sign cards.

Saturday night’s home opener against Ripley is the lone game of the weekend for the Caps. Walkerton will face Saugeen Shores the following weekend in the Winterhawks home opener Oct. 7 at 8:30 p.m., and will be back at home Oct. 8 to face the rival Shallow Lake Crushers at 6:30 p.m.
