Social Services and Tornado

Goderich | by Dianne Colgan

Ontario Works Manager has high praise

Social Services at the County of Huron is praising hard work and social media for keeping people informed in the days and weeks following the August tornado.

Ontario Works Manager Michele Gaynor praises all of the organizations, churches and service clubs that stepped up to the plate to help out.

Gaynor says 211 did an amazing job in a situation that they had never experienced before.

211 operates out of Collingwood and is a community information portal -- so they were swamped with phone calls concerning Goderich.

Gaynor says they also helped to operate a facebook group that was viewed almost five million times for information on donations, volunteering and where to get help.

As for displaced people, Gaynor says the Red Cross identified 110 families or individuals that needed lodging, but 98 of them were able to find their own places to stay through family or friends.
