Tax Relief for Tornado Victims

Goderich | by Rick Stow

If the tornado has affected the value of your home, tax releif is here

If your home or building was damaged or destroyed by the recent F3 tornado it won't be worth what it once was.

Tell that to MPAC-- the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation.

The usual practise is to keep paying property taxes at the present rate, by instalment as the taxes become due, while the folks in Toronto process your application for reduced assessment.

Once the bureaucracy has eventually dealt with you, your account will be credited.

Lori Rounds, tax collector and Deputy-Treasurer for Goderich, doesn't think that's fair-- and brought a recommendation to Town Council at its September 12th meeting.

Members agreed with her suggestion and passed a motion.

If you have-- or will be applying for tax relief because of the tornado, any penalties or interest you may owe will be waived, retroactive to the date the tornado struck.

Council's charitable mood continued when it passed a motion by Councillor Donnelly, who had been lobbying his peers to strike down a provision which allows the Town to call due all tax installments when one is missed.
