Hogeboom Wins Mid Amateur

Kingston golfer wins Women's Mid Amateur, Wasaga golfer finishes sixth.

Patricia Hogeboom Dominates at Investors Group Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship
Thornhill, ON (GOLF ASSOCIATION OF ONTARIO) – Kingston resident Patricia Hogeboom captured the Investors Group Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship title on Friday, cruising to a nine stroke victory over the field at Thornhill Golf and Country Club.
After earning runner-up honours in 2010, the Cataraqui Golf and Country Club member dominated the field in 2011, delivering a trio of identical one-over par 73’s to earn the trophy in her second attempt at the Mid-Amateur (age 25 and over) title.
The 27-year-old looked comfortable on the demanding Stanley Thompson-designed track, laying down 12 birdies throughout the week to pull ahead of the rest of the field.
“I had heard that Thornhill was an extremely tight golf course in great condition, and a very true, very demanding test of golf. I knew I was going to have to keep it in the fairway,” said Hogeboom.
“I drove the ball well off the tee and usually that’s the weakest part of my game. This week I kept it in play, which let me have clear shots in to the greens.”
The Augusta State University graduate closed out the competition in style, dropping a birdie putt on the 18th hole to the cheers of a loud gallery of spectators to card her third 73 of the tournament..
“Each day was very different in how I got to 73,” she said. “The first day I felt I left a lot out there. The second day and today I really scrambled, but I grinded it out and never gave up and didn’t make any big mistakes or big numbers.”
“I didn’t have that many expectations, I really just wanted to come out here and enjoy the golf course and play as well as I possibly could.”
Hogeboom’s next test will be the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur championship, where she will take to the course at Bayville Golf Club in Virginia Beach next week.
Earning runner-up honours in the competition was local favourite Judith Kyrinis of Thornhill who finished with a total score of 228 (75-76-77, +12) on her home course. Kyrinis, who will also be in the field at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur, delivered three solid rounds to pick up the silver medal.
Finishing in third place was Uxbridge resident Gail Pimm. The Mill Run Golf Course member finished at +16 with a total score of 232 (76-78-78) to earn the bronze medal for the second consecutive year. Ottawa resident Susan Pearl, a GAO Public Player, finished in fourth place with a cumulative 239 (81-81-77, +23), while Toronto’s Jane Kirkpatrick finished fifth at +24 with a total score of 240 (82-81-77).
The Investors Group Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur championship is contested annually and is open to female golfers age 25 and over.  First contested in 1989, the championship trophy is named after Canadian and Ontario Golf Hall of Fame member Mary Ann Hayward, who has captured the title fourteen times.
The Golf Association of Ontario would like to thank the members, staff and volunteers from Thornhill Golf and Country Club for their hospitality and use of the course for the week, and Investors Group for their continued support of amateur golf in Ontario.
