Easing Into Grade 9

Link Crew Day allows Grade 9 students to mentor with a senior at new high school.

The Bluewater District School Board is offering a unique program today to help grade 9 students feel comfortable entering the high school environment.

Link Crew Day is an annual tradition now in its fifth year.

The mentorship program pairs incoming grade 9 students with their senior student peers at all 11 Bluewater schools.

Student Success Leader Jean Stephenson says it helps ease the stress of transitioning from elementary school to high school.

Stephenson says the day will include a special morning assembly, tours of the school, and other orientation activities.

She notes the senior mentors will continue to work with the grade 9 students through the entire school year, not just the first day -- making it a great way for the seniors to build leadership skills.

Link Crew Day is also a great opportunity for grade 9 students to interact with each other in a comfortable atmosphere.

Stephenson says ever since they launched this program five years ago -- they've gotten great feedback from parents and students alike.

The first official day of school for grades 10, 11 and 12 students is on Wednesday.
