Quarry Must Have EA

Shelburne | by Mariane McLeod

A small victory for protesters of mega-quarry as MNR rules assessment is needed.

A win for the people who have been battling plans for a huge gravel quarry south of Collingwood.

The provincial Natural Resources Minister John Wilkinson says the 23 hundred acre quarry proposed for both sides of County Road 124 between Shelburne and Singhampton will have to have an environmental assessment.

Wilkinson says he believes a comprehensive and independent assessment of the environmental impacts of the quarry proposal is required.

The company behind the proposal, Highland Companies, bought up more than nine thousand acres of farmland over the last several years in preparation for the big dig.

Highland says the site was selected so its aggregate operations could be done in an environmentally, socially and economically responsible manner.

Since plans for the quarry were made public, there have been several protests of the proposal.
