Ground Broken for School

Wingham | by Peter Jackson

It's taken a long time, but ground finally broken for Maitland River Elementary School.

It's taken a long time to get to this stage but ground has been broken for the new Maitland River Elementary School in Wingham.

The school on an 18-acre property next to FE Madill High School comes about as the result of a board accommodation review done two years ago.

Avon-Maitland District School Board spokesperson Steve Howe calls the new school state of the art and will accommodate students from four smaller schools that are to be closed.

He hopes actual construction can begin within the next few months.

The construction tender has to be issued and there are several other considerations before constructions starts.

Howe tells us the new Wingham school will be environmentally-friendly.

He points out Avon-Maitland learned much about building green schools from the recent planning and construction of Little Falls Elementary in St. Mary's.

The new school in Wingham should be completed in the fall of 2012 and will cost around 10-million dollars to build.
