Fire Destroys Home

Owen Sound | by Kevin Bernard

Strange smell from home that is gutted by fire on west side of Owen Sound.

A two storey brick house on Owen Sounds' west side has been destroyed by fire.

Flames hit 1558 4th Avenue West just after 5 PM on Wednesday.

Five people live at the home and four of the residents where home when the blaze broke out.

One spotted smoke coming from the second floor, and they then fled the home.

All of the people inside the house, and most of their pets got out safely.

Owen Sound firefighters, ambulance and police all responded to the fire and 4th Avenue West was closed from 14th Street to 16th Street West for four and a half hours.

Five fire trucks were on the scene including a ladder-pumper truck and thousands of litres of water were pumped into the home to try and put out the stubborn flames.

Most of the fire appeared to be at the back end of the home and in the attic, and an aluminum roof (shingles) kept firefighters from getting at the blaze for some time.

Eventually, firefighters chopped a hole in the front facade of the attic and blasted water in at the flames.

By 8 PM -- about half of the roof had collapsed and flames and smoke were still coming out of the remaining part.

No damage estimate is available but it is likely well over 200 thousand dollars, as the brick building is still standing but appears to be gutted inside.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Police say it's not suspicious.
