Legate's Furniture Crash

Owen Sound | by Kevin Bernard

Legate's Furniture Store suffered heavy damage, when a car crashed into the building.

A nearly 100 year old downtown Owen Sound business suffered heavy damage, when a car crashed into the building.

City police say a Hyundai collided with a Pontiac Vibe at the corner of 8th street and 2nd Avenue East in Owen Sound Friday night.

The force of the impact caused the Hyundai to spin out of control and crash into the front window and doors of Legate’s Furniture Company, right at the corner of 8th street and 2nd Avenue East.

Owen Sound Police Sergeant Sandra Green says the building received extensive damage, with the car ending up partially in the store.

No dollar figure is available, but Green says it will likely be in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Most of the large panes of glass along 8th street were smashed, along with the door into the furniture store -- and several items on display.

It happened shortly after 8 PM Friday but fortunately, the business was closed at the time crash and no pedestrians were on the sidewalk.

The 70 year old Owen Sound woman in the Hyundai was taken to hospital by ambulance as a precautionary measure but she was not seriously injured.

The 49 year old Owen Sound man driving the Vibe was not hurt.

The woman has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with failing to stop for a red Light.

Crews worked for several hours to secure the building and clean up the area of the sidewalk.
