National Track & Field Championship

at Calgary

Paralympic athlete Rick Carr and his guide runner Evan Porter of Port Elgin are competing today in the 100 metres.

Carr is legally blind but has competed in a variety of running events with the assistance of Porter through the years.

Earlier this week, Carr won the Long Jump for visually impaired athletes



Legends Fastball Tournament

at Kitchener

The Owen Sound Verge Senior Selects & the Brick Brothers Volkswagen Junior Selects are both competing

Next weekend, the Owen Sound Brick Brothers Volkswagen Junior Selects will host the Ontario Junior Men's fastball Championship Tournament at Duncan McLellan Park.

The schedule for the event next week is being revised in order to have both Owen Sound entries playing on the Friday night

Last night, the Owen Sound Grey Motors United squad blanked Orangeville Athletic 5-0

Corey Schwartz posted the shutout while Adam Blundell scored twice for Owen Sound

Grey Motors will play their fourth straight game on the road Sunday when they travel to Collingwood.



NHL Entry Draft

at the Xcel Centre in Minnesota

7 members of the Owen Sound Attack including netminder Jordan Binnington. plus forward Garrett Meurs ( Meerz ) of Ripley, a forward with the Plymouth Whalers are candidates to be drafted

The Edmonton Oilers have the first pick overall.


The Owen Sound Attack have a coaching vacancy, and may have a second vacancy before the end of the weekend.

Yesterday, it was confirmed that head coach Mark Reeds is departing Owen Sound to become an assistant coach with the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League.

Reeds spent yesterday at coaching clinics in Minnesota as part of the NHL Entry Draft Weekend.

Attack Assistant Coach Terry Virtue was also at the clinic and while Virtue is a candidate to replace Reeds in Owen Sound, he could land a job with an American Hockey league franchise before the weekend is over.

Reportedly, Virtue has interviews set up with both the Anaheim Ducks & the Columbus Blue Jackets regarding AHL coaching opportunities.

Along with Virtue, there is no shortage of coaching candidates popping up in the short term- as many as a half dozen already

Based on the Attack's past history, it's believed the search for a new coach will be a prolonged affair and the successful candidate will have NHL playing experience.


Boxing @ The Beach

The Tri Star Academy at Wasaga Beach will present their third annual Olympic Style Boxing Night on Saturday night.

The event, which includes a dinner before the matches, commences at 6 pm at the Rec Plex in Wasaga Beach.

On the night, there will be 13 bouts, featuring boxers from all over Ontario including many Tri Star students.

The Main Event will be a Women's Match pitting Canadian Olympic hopeful Mary Spencer against Melinda Watpool of the Durham Boxing Academy.


Hanover Raceway Open House

Hanover Raceway has a race card Saturday night featuring the Slots Cup plus they will also stage an Open House in the Backstretch Sunday from Noon until 4 pm.
