New Nurses for Perth

Perth | by Peter Jackson

Thanks to provincial money, the Health Unit will hire two more public health nurses.

The Perth District Health Unit will be able to hire two new public health nurses with a 170-thousand dollar grant from the province.

Medical Officer of Health, Doctor Miriam Klassen says the new hires will have a wide range of work.

The new nurses will concentrate on what's called "social determinants of health".

Klassen says they will examine areas across Perth to see what the most pressing health care needs are in each area.

Klassen tells us the Health Unit the new nursing staff will be in touch with the community.

Besides the clinical required of public health nurses they'll also be engaged in education and advocacy, as well as raising awareness of health issues in the community.

Klassen hopes to have the new nurses in place as soon as possible.

She says some work will need to be done to bring them up to speed on their new responsibilities and doesn't have a set target date for them to be in place.

The grant was announced on Friday by Perth-Wellington MPP John Wilkinson.
