No Wind Committee

Meaford | by James Greensmith

Meaford decides against forming ad hoc committee to explore wind and green energy.

Meaford council has decided against forming an ad hoc committee to explore the issue of wind turbines and other forms of green energy.

At Monday's meeting -- it was decided that council will instruct staff to gather legal and scientific information on the issue, and report back to council so they can make a more informed decision.

This comes as wind farm developer International Power Corporation explores their "Silcote Corners Wind Project", which would see 29 wind turbines erected between Annan and Balaclava.

Councillor Mike Poetker tabled the motion to have staff explore the issue further, and he hopes in doing so -- more information can be gathered independently without the expense of forming a committee.

Poetker says they will examine the pros and cons of all forms of alternative energy, everything from wind to solar to biomass energy solutions.

He says once council sets the parameters of exactly what issues an ad hoc committee could explore, the idea may be revisited.

Poetker adds IPC has not set a date for their next public meeting to further discuss the issue, but he says they have agreed to a town hall style forum.
