Emancipation Festival in Owen Sound
by Jenn Rock The history of Owen Sound as being a part of the Under Ground railroad is being brought to the forefront this weekend. The Emancipation Celebration Festival in Owen Sound is the longest running festival in North America. Lara Javalyn is the Community Relations Co-ordinator at Grey Roots Museum and Archives and explains Owen Sound was one of the most northern reaches of the underground railroad. The festival marks a weekend of music, art, literature and speakers that celebrate Owen Sound's black history. The big event is Saturday's 148th Emancipation Celebration Picnic at Harrison Park running all day. Javalyn says this is always a huge event that is very popular with music - cultural food - arts and games for the children. There is also the emancipation festival showcase with R&B - soul and jazz at the park. Admission to the festival is $10 for adults - $5 for seniors and children 12 and under are free.
