Safety Reminder from Fire Department

It's time to spring ahead and turn your clocks ahead one hour before you hit the sack this evening as daylight saving time begins at midnight.

However before you do that, make sure you go around the house and change the batteries in your smoke detectors and Carbon Monoxide alarms.

Owen Sound Fire Prevention Officer Tom Potter says that very action could save your life in the event of a fire in the future.

He says it now is the law in Ontario to have a working smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside very sleeping area.

Failure to do that will result in a fine of 235 dollars which the Fire Department already has issued to several individuals over the past little while.

Potter says in addition to the smoke alarms, people should have at least one Carbon Monoxide located in their home and the best place for that is outside their sleeping area.

He says when you are sleeping is the time you are most vulnerable to the so called silent killer that's why its a working CO2 detector is essential for your home.

Potter also says if your smoke detector is more than 10 years old, its probably a good idea to replace it as they too can wear out over time.
