Great Lakes Report

Good news for the Great Lakes coming out of Toronto.

Goderich Mayor Deb Shewfelt says the inaugural Provincial-Municipal Great Lakes Summit saw great co-operation from the Ontario government on how to keep the lakes healthy and clean.

Shewfelt says Minister of the Environment John Garretson committed to an economic study of the Great Lakes region.

He says Mayors from across the Great Lakes drafted a comprehensive five-point plan on what needs to be done, with help from the Province, to sustain the lakes.

Shewfelt says the Mayors want to see more done to promote Ontario as a major beach and shoreline destination as well as more research into the economic benefits of the lakes.

He says Goderich specifically has a problem with algae, and part of the wish list is to see an algae control plan for all the lakes.

Shewfelt says Goderich is ahead of the curve with sewage and stormwater treatment, but that is an issue that continues to affect the other regions.

He says they'd like to see all levels of government come together and discuss their options with concern to the Great Lakes.
