A Saugeen Shores sports and recreation organization has stepped up to support the Salvation Army Port Elgin Food Bank.
Social Athletics of Saugeen Shores provided a $5,000 donation to the local food bank, with much of the funds coming from its member teams.
The organization says during its executive committee meeting after cancelling season, the discussion turned to refunds for teams.
"One executive member proposed making a donation on behalf of SASS to the local food bank and asking if our teams would like their refunds included in the donation instead of getting the money back. Thankfully, 33 of our 38 teams decided to donate their refunds," a statement from Social Athletics of Saugeen Shores explains. "What a great gesture from our teams."
The donation from the teams amounted to $3,300 and was topped up by league funds to $5,000.
"Hopefully this can help many local families get through this difficult time," a release from the SASS executive says.
Social Athletics of Saugeen Shores, formerly the Port Elgin Beach Volleyball Club, operates many recreation offerings including beach volleyball, dodgeball, indoor volleyball, blastball and co-ed slopitch.
