Goderich Mayor Says Health Is Priority, Ahead of Victoria Day Weekend

Goderich | by Fadi Didi

Mayor John Grace says his first priority is maintaining public health, despite Victoria Day weekend meaning a typical start to tourism season.

Goderich Mayor John Grace says his priority heading into the Victoria Day long weekend is health before economics.

In an interview with Country 104.9 News, Grace acknowledged the May long weekend as the start of the season in which local businesses can begin expecting greater revenues.

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the mayor is asking seasonal cottagers to avoid Canada's Prettiest Town until provincial officials give the thumbs up to seasonal travel.

Premier Doug Ford this week changed his stance on those visiting their seasonal homes, saying "there will be plenty of long weekends to come."

Grace says the main goal is "keeping the community healthy and safe" as the COVID-19 crisis continues.

He says there are no plans to open Goderich's boat launch, along North Harbour Road, but he will follow the guidance of the Ontario government.
