Report Coming On Future On Goderich's Memorial Arena

Goderich | by Peter Jackson

After arena was closed in 2018 due to issues with ammonia refrigeration, Goderich councillors are looking at their options.

Goderich municipal staff are working on a report on the future of Memorial Arena, after a member of Council expressed frustration over slow progress in moving forward.

The issue has remained under the "Unfinished Business" section of Council meeting agendas for several months, pending an upcoming strategic planning session.

Councillor Trevor Bazinet called for the report in early March, saying discussion is needed on what to do with the 71 year-old building.

An ad-hoc committee on Memorial has been suggested by Councillor Stephen Tamming.

The ice was removed from Memorial Arena in the summer of 2018, after an engineer's report revealed that the pipes under the floor leading from the ammonia-based refrigeration plant were in poor condition.

Since then, Goderich's only ice pad is at the Maitland Rec Centre.
