While the healthcare community braces for a growing number of COVID-19 cases, the community is rallying around its hospital workers.

Painted "rocks of gratitude" are being left outside hospital entrances, personal protective gear is being donated, bouquets of flowers are being sent, white ribbons are being tied onto trees in support of healthcare and frontline workers, and people are making noise from their doorsteps and vehicles to show their appreciation.

"People are being very gracious and supportive," says Grey Bruce Health Services President and CEO Gary Sims adding, "People are putting signs everywhere that support frontline workers and healthcare workers in general."

"I can tell you for both the patients and the staff...there are tears sometimes because while we are professionals and we are frontline, and we are experts at what we do...we are separated from our families, we are working hard and we have the same fears that everybody else has, but we have a duty to be here and to protect our patients," says Sims.

"Some of these pieces mean a lot to my staff," says Sims, "To those people that are doing those great things we thank you immensely and hopefully we can celebrate a bit when we get out of this."

Sims says it's not just those who are working who are seeing support from the community, "The Complex Continuing Care Centre in Wiarton has an extremely isolated group that are there for long periods of time and Kevin Gilbert, a local farmer and his family...just recently, they brought up two horses, two sheep goats a dog and four lambs to parade past the patients so the patients could see them all."
