Water rates are increasing in Goderich, starting next year.
Town Council has passed a financial plan that will see rates go up by 4.8 per-cent, effective January 1st, 2021.
Deputy Mayor Myles Murdock says the town will need to make improvements to its water and wastewater treatment facilities, and that it's better to address the issue sooner rather than later.
He admits the municipality should have started putting funds in a reserve account earlier, with regard to continued water safety, and how long the facilities would last.
Murdock adds that the province expects a reserve fund to be self-paying, which makes a rate hike necessary.
