Some Goderich Groups Face Grant Request Cuts

Goderich | by Peter Jackson

Requests from the annual Celtic Festival and United Way Perth-Huron are being reduced

Some community groups in Goderich are seeing their 2020 municipal grant requests cut, while asks from others remain intact.

Tempers flared at times during the grant portion of this week's Council capital budget session, with disagreements on which groups should receive reduced funding.

Mayor John Grace says the town prides itself on supporting the efforts of groups who do community work, or stage events that draw locals and tourists.

Some of the groups whose funding requests were reduced include the Maitland Trail Association, which will receive $3 thousand.

The annual Celtic Festival ask has been cut to $5 thousand from its original $15 thousand request.

Other grant reduction highlights include the Multicultural Festival, which will receive $1 thousand and United Way Perth-Huron, which is now in line for $4 thousand.

The United Way had asked for over $76 hundred, to reflect a donation of a dollar representing each Goderich resident.

Goderich Council will resume discussions when the operating budget is examined, sometime next month.
