Goderich 2020 Budget Talks Expected To Be Finalized In March

Goderich | by Peter Jackson

Mayor John Grace says Tuesday meeting was first step in road toward finalizing this year's budget.

Goderich Council is part-way through its annual budget deliberations, but property owners won't know how their tax bill will be affected until sometime next month.

Councillors Tuesday started discussions with the capital budget that pays for things like infrastructure maintenance, upgrades and additions.

The capital spending plan totalling just under $7 million also covers policing, fire protection and recreation facility costs.

Goderich Mayor John Grace says Tuesday's session was the first step along a lengthy road toward finalizing the entire budget.

Among the biggest ticket items is a fire department ladder truck, to replace an existing unit built in 1992 and purchased used after serving a fire department in Florida.

Fire Chief Darren Doak told Council a replacement would cost $920 thousand.

Grace says the rest of the capital budget process was an overview, with the fire truck being the only line-item discussed.

He adds that there will be at least one more budget deliberation meeting in March, and likely more to follow.
