Plans to make Fairy Lake Sparkle for Christmas are coming together.
Following the Southampton Santa Claus Parade (Dec 6) the students of G.C. Huston are welcoming the community to watch them light up Fairy Lake's Rotary (Bandshell) Pavilion, unveil a dedication and serve-up donated hot chocolate.
Brenda Elliott who is assisting in the student led idea says the students have really gotten into the project.
"It's going to give them a sense of community and a sense of accomplishment and it's going to be their baby to be responsible for."
A special sign will be unveiled at the sparkly event, as well as plans for the future.
"There will be a dedication ceremony for some community people we've lost over the years, that we felt would either be helping us out with this or would definitely be present at the event."
The memory of a woman who grew up next to Fairy Lake will be honoured; as will the life of a man who would figure skate on top of it... "when it was known as Little Lake," says Elliott.
Fairy Lakes neighbour, the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation are behind the project and will serve cookies at the event and will have their 2020 Community Calendars available which features G.C. Students.
When speaking to Saugeen Shores Council in October, Elliott said the students reached out to homeowners along the lake and no negatives were expressed.
"I'm very hopeful that within five years, we're (Fairy Lake) lit up beyond the Christmas season... so Fairy Lake can be used at night throughout the year."
