With Riker comes a new police vehicle outfitted for the canine co-worker

The Saugeen Shores Community is coming together to fundraise for the newest recruit to the Saugeen Shores Police Services, Riker the 18- month old German Shepard.

Wine and Dine for our K-9, will take place at Lakeshore Recreation November 16 and includes music from Second Glance and features a dinner and auction.

Saugeen Shores Police Chief Mike Bellai says Riker is currently with his partner, Constable Erik Luscombe training with the Toronto Police Force.

"The training will be completed... probably at the end of December or early January and then he will be out on the road here," says Bellai.

Bellai says Riker has many different skill sets and will work on what he's tasked to do on that particular work day.

"Whether it be going after someone whose fled from police to do a track, or if he's going to search for guns or drugs...he's trained to do those things."

The Police Chief adds Riker is a working service dog; as such the public must check with Officer Luscombe before approaching the canine.

With Riker comes a new police vehicle outfitted for the canine co-worker.

A new pick-up truck has already been sponsored and includes a kennel and special equipment including a temperature regulator and a remote specialized door.

The Police Service is hoping to  create a reserve fund to sustain the canine program for years to come from proceeds from the event.

Tickets are available at the Police Station, Gord Imprints and Designs, Unleash the Pawsitive, Lakeshore Recreation and Miller Insurance in Port Elgin, and The Cook's Cupboard, Miller Insurance Brokers and Martin's Home Hardware in Southampton.

Tickets will be availalbe until 5 p.m. on Thursday Nov. 14.
