Man Charged with Arson in Walkerton Barn Fire

Walkerton | by Matt Hermiz

Firefighters responded to blaze early Wednesday morning.

Provincial Police have charged a 23-year-old man with arson after a barn fire just outside of Walkerton yesterday.

Brockton Fire Chief and Community Emergency Management Coordinator Mike Murphy says members of the Walkerton Fire Department were called to the blaze on Bruce County Road 2 -- not far from the Larsen & Shaw building -- around 6:50 a.m. Wednesday morning and arrived to find the barn fully engulfed in flames.

Mildmay and Elmwood firefighters also assisted in battling the blaze, which Murphy says was contained within about 30 minutes.

Murphy notes the structure was a total loss. He says there were no livestock in the barn as it was not in active use. Only some minor farm implements were inside.

South Bruce OPP say a 23-year-old Brockton man located on the property was arrested and charged with arson, two counts of theft under $5,000 and two counts of break and enter.

Police have not named the accused.
