Saugeen Shores Chamber Board Votes for One Santa Claus Parade

Saugeen Shores | by Megan Johnson

The parade will take place in Southampton this year and move to Port Elgin in 2020

It's official, the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has voted in favour of one Santa Claus Parade within Saugeen Shores.

The Board of Directors convened last Thursday (September 26, 2019) to vote on a decision to amalgamate the parades.

Southampton will host the sole parade along High Street with a parade in Port Elgin, to take place in 2020.

As of press time, the Chamber could not confirm if the parade would take place on the scheduled day of December 6.

In a release, Chamber Executive Director Kimberley Inniss-Petersen says, "an overwhelming majority of directors voted in favour of amalgamation,".

The Chamber asks those interested in volunteering or if your organization would like information on how to organize a parade for 2019 in Port Elgin,  to contact the Chamber of Commerce at 519-832-2332.

In a Media Release, Inniss-Petersen made sure to correct feedback she's heard from the community which includes reminding everyone that Pumpkinfest is a separate organization and as of 2018 operates outside of the Chamber.

Satisfying shift worker schedules, individuals with limited transportation and adding double exposure for participating businesses were considered, "but those considerations cannot reduce our identified risks," she says.

She also cites year after year the parades have run at a deficit.

Although parades receive funds from sponsors, pipe and drum as well as concert bands typically come at a cost.
