Owen Sound Councillor Hopes for Further Heritage Protections for Greenwood Cemetery

Owen Sound city councillor Carol Merton wants to see further protections for Greenwood Cemetery as a historical site.

Merton recently brought a motion through the community services committee for staff to investigate the process of designating Greenwood under the Ontario Heritage Act. The recommendation was approved by council at its last meeting.

Greenwood opened in the 1850's, the mausoleum opened in 1927 making it the oldest structure in the cemetery.

Merton says that designation would not eliminate the possibility for change to the buildings but would ensure the process goes through proper procedures that would help preserve the cultural significance of the site.

She also says the local historical value stretches beyond the buildings.
