County council approves airport deal

Midhurst | by Ian MacLennan

Simcoe County will become the majority owner of the Lake Simcoe Regional Airport.

Simcoe County Council has approved the purchase of additional shares from the City of Barrie and Oro-Medonte Township to become the majority owner of the Lake Simcoe Regional Airport.

As of January 1, 2020,  the County will own a 90 per cent stake in the airport,   Barrie retains 10 per cent ownership.

The County says  the airport, located on Line 7 North in Oro-Medonte,  is set to undergo a rapid expansion in an effort to boost regional economic development,  create jobs and grow commercial, passenger and commuter air traffic.

Airport shareholders approved a  new Strategic Plan last June with a three phase plan, including a runway expansion to allow for greater aviation activities.
