Goderich To Vote On Enhanced Smoking By-Law For Public Spaces

Goderich | by Peter Jackson

Councillors to vote on by-law August 12th that would ban smoking, vaping in public parks and municipally-owned properties.

The town of Goderich is getting tough with smokers who indulge their habit in public parks and municipally-owned properties.

Town Clerk Janice Hallahan says a new by-law is on the way, that would see a smoking ban in all such spaces.

The issue was raised Monday by Councillor Trevor Bazinet, who says he was told about cigarette butts already appearing in baseball dugouts at Bannister Park.

The complex has been open to the public only since July 1st, and has its grand opening this Saturday.

Bazinet is confident he has the full support of Council on the by-law proposal, and believes smoking should not be permitted in any of the town's green spaces.

He says signage will be put up at Bannister Park and other green spaces, with the by-law to be read and voted on by Council at its next meeting on August 12th.

Signage is already in place at Victoria Park, prohibiting smoking and vaping.
