Revived Goderich Sunday Market To Start Today

Goderich | by Peter Jackson

The privately-funded venture is the idea of former Mayor Kevin Morrison and Patrick Foster

Around 20 vendors are expected in Courthouse Park in downtown Goderich today, as a new  Sunday outdoor market launches.

The market is the idea of former Mayor Kevin Morrison and his partner Patrick Foster, who co-own Pat and Kevin's On The Square.

Morrison says the privately-funded venture is called "The Courthouse Square Open-Air Sunday Market", and replaces the weekly flea market.

The flea market moved to another location this year, after the Downtown BIA stopped backing it due to increasing expenses.

Morrison says reviving a weekly summer market in the centre of downtown is necessary for surrounding businesses' warm-weather revenue.

He told Goderich Council recently that some stores have seen a 20 per-cent loss in trade, because a market was no longer there.

Morrison says he and Foster heard numerous neighbouring business owners calling for a return of a Sunday event.

While the number of vendors may be relatively small to start, Morrison hopes as many as 150 to 200 will fill Courthouse Park by this time next year, along with musical and other entertainment.
