Goderich Mayor Says Broadband Key To Improving Economy

Huron County | by Fadi Didi

John Grace says ultra high-speed internet important to promoting business in Huron County.

Goderich Mayor John Grace says ultra high-speed internet will be key in building the region's economy.

Huron County is currently invested in a province-wide project (Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology, or SWIFT) to expand broadband internet to rural communities, to the tune of $678 thousand.

Grace says the process of bringing the city-speed internet to Huron County is slow, but necessary.

He tells Country 104.9 News the ultra high-speed broadband will allow entrepreneurs in the region to access online speeds comparable to larger urban centres.

With lower rent costs in rural Ontario, county officials say there would be strong economic payoffs following the implementation of faster internet.

The SWIFT project has already begun dolling out funding to rural areas, with Norfolk County being the first.
