June is ALS awarness month and to kick it off the North Grey Bruce WALK to End ALS will take place today.
Last year's five-kilometre walk raised $22,000 for the ALS Society of Canada, part of a $4 million nationwide total, and has set a goal of $30,000 for this year's campaign.
All proceeds from the WALK provide services and support for people living with ALS and funds research with the potential to make ALS a treatable, not terminal disease. Currently around 1,000 Canadians are diagnosed with ALS each year and 80 per cent of them die within two to five years.
The event will feature a free lunch provided by Sola's Grill; a raffle and silent auction as well as a kids' zone.
During the month of June, returning major sponsor the Southampton Olive Oil Company, will be donating $1 for every bottle of olive oil and vinegar towards the cause.
Registration for the event begins at 10 a.m. the event is expected to draw 100 people to the event which begins at 11a.m. at the Wiarton Community Centre and Arena.
