Alzheimer's Walks in Region Today

Grey Bruce | by Megan Johnson

Several walks in Grey Bruce to support battle against disease.

Alzheimers is a devastating disease which not only affects those living with it but also their caregivers, and this morning there will be four IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimers to choose from to support Grey Bruce Initiatives.

"Every dollar raised goes back into our own budget," says Chris Doyle of the Grey Bruce Alzheimer's Society.

The area society helps 1,000 local families living with dementia in Grey and Bruce.

"We have a really high rate of dementia here," says Doyle. "Per capita our population above 65 is bigger than anywhere else in Ontario, so we have a really high rate of dementia here."

He says they do have clients in their 50s and occasionally you'll see someone younger, however Doyle says that's rare.

"Our core service is we have specialized support councillors who look after different geographic regions in Grey and Bruce... to help navigate dementia and the health care system...support groups all across Grey and Bruce,  the memory cafe, a social support group for people living with dementia and their care partner, and the minds in motion program in six communities."

Doyle says they also have a program where they lend out I-pods and have robotic companions.

Registration for area walks begins at 9 a.m. with walks taking place at 10 a.m.

Local walks will occur in:
Southampton - Fairy Lake
Hanover - Sulphur Springs Conservation Area
Owen Sound -Grey Sauble Conservation Arboretum
The Town of Blue Mountains -Cedar Grove Labyrinth
