Sweeping Report Released On Goderich's Memorial Arena

Goderich | by Peter Jackson

Future of arena's ice surface in the air, as councillors examine 217 page report on Memorial Arena.

Members of Goderich Town Council are examining a comprehensive report on the condition of Memorial Arena, and likely won't debate the issue for at least two weeks.

The document covers 217 pages, and was submitted Monday by Chief Administrative Officer Larry McCabe.

The report contains numerous expert evaluations of the venue including the ice plant, building condition, and possibly hazardous content like lead, asbestos and arsenic.

The ice plant in the 70 year-old arena was closed last year, after concern was raised in an engineer's report on the condition of the ammonia-based system.

The document presents several options: install a new ice plant or repurpose the building, sell Memorial Arena, or demolish it for added parking for neighbouring Bannister Park.

Deputy Mayor Myles Murdock would like to hear options from the public, while Councillor Trevor Bazinet says he wouldn't want to see the building torn down if there's a way to save it.
