Grand Bend, Goderich Rotary Clubs To Ship Food To Devastated Mozambique Community

Grand Bend | by Fadi Didi

Following devastating cyclone, Rotarians are fundraising to ship several tonnes of beans to Mozambique.

The Goderich Rotary Club is helping their counterparts in Grand Bend with a fundraiser for an African community.

On March 15th, a cyclone in Mozambique destroyed over 100 thousand homes, and wiped out over 700 thousand hectares of crops.

Treasurer of the Goderich Rotary Club, Betty Southgate, says the local Rotarians are preparing a forty foot container for shipment of dried food from Ontario Christian Gleaners in Cambridge along with emergency medical supplies to a Rotary Club near the town of Beira.

Southgate says the Rotary Club of Grand Bend has been shipping containers of supplies overseas since 2013, when a shipment of school supplies was sent to South Africa.

Eight tons of kidney beans from Ferguson Bros. of St. Thomas farms in Elgin County will help provide enough food for roughly a million meals.

In order to pay for the container to be shipped, the Rotary clubs are looking to raise $10 thousand.
