It still needs to be approved by full council, but a committee has approved sanctions against a Wasaga Beach councillor.

It still needs to be approved by full council, but a committee has approved sanctions against a Wasaga Beach councillor.

At this afternoon's (Thursday) Committee of the Whole, the town's Integrity Commissioner, Principles Integrity, made a presentation on its report to do with complaints against Councillor Joe Belanger.

Janice Atwood-Petkovski of Principles Integrity told the committee that their recommendation of docking ten days pay sends a message that engaging in inappropriate conduct and behaviour by attacking the motives and actions of the mayor and others undermines the town and the public interest.

The Integrity Commissioner found that Councillor Belanger's behaviour violates the Code of Conduct.

The councillor says he will ensure he chooses his words more carefully and will continue to represent the business community and residents.

The committee voted unanimously (6-0) to suspend the councillor's pay. Joe Belanger did not get to vote.
