Councillor Violated Code of Conduct

Wasaga Beach | by Catherine Thompson

A Wasaga Beach councillor could be docked pay.

A Wasaga Beach councillor could be docked pay.

An Integrity Commissioner'S report recommends the sanction against Councillor Joe Belanger.

The report is on the agenda for tomorrow's (Thursday) Committee of the Whole meeting (at 1 PM).

The committee will consider recommending that full council approve suspending Belanger's pay for ten days starting with his next pay period for breaching the Code of Conduct.

The Integrity Commissioner has found that a complaint that councillor Joe Belanger criticized a report from the CAO as “inaccurate and somewhat misleading” is inappropriate.

The report says the Code of Conduct requires that members of council be respectful of the role of staff.

The Integrity Commissioner also finds that councillor Belanger is engaging in inappropriate conduct and behaviour by attacking the motives and actions of the mayor and others.

The report also talks about complaints launched by Councillor Joe Belanger against Mayor Nina Bifolchi to do with having a conflict of interest regarding the chosen casino site because her parents' business is nearby.

The Integrity Commissioner has cleared the mayor of all complaints.
