Peel Secondary Teachers Get Layoff Notices

Peel Region | by Phil DeLand

Almost 200 secondary school teachers in the Peel District School Board are affected.

Hundreds of teachers in Peel have been handed layoff notices.

Officials with the Peel District School Board say almost 200 secondary school teachers were handed the notices following the provincial government changes.

They say the decision to increase some class sizes is one of the reasons the notices were issued.

Last month Education Minister Lisa Thompson announced the average class size in Grades 9 through 12 will increase from 22 students to 28 students.

Meanwhile, the average class sizes in Grades 4 through 8 will go from 23 students to 24 students.

Earlier this month, teachers in the Upper Grand District School Board were also handed layoff notices.
