Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transit or SMART will be shopping for new vans this year.
In a presentation to Kincardine Council, the manager of SMART Roger Cook says the company's equipment is wearing out and they're in need of five new vans.
SMART has 27 vehicles in service, operating in Kincardine, Saugeen Shores, Arran Elderslie, Brockton, Chatsworth, Hanover, Huron Kinloss, Southgate and West Grey.
A van costs approximately $250,000.
Cook says through the Investing in Canadian Infrastructure Program, SMART is potentially eligible to receive $560,000 with its 9 partners sharing in just over $200,000 in additional costs.
The money is not guaranteed yet but it's hoped the money will come from the senior levels of government.
Meanwhile, the SMART service is growing in Kincardine.
Cook says, "In a lot of ways, there's no other way for our clients to get around."
Kincardine has 162 registered clients who have taken over 4,000 rides in 2018--up 23.8% from 2017.
SMART is a specialized public transit operation serving mentally and physically challenged residents.
