Not enough cabs on the weekend

Orillia | by Bayshore News Staff

Mayor suggests loosening background checks of Uber and other ride sharing drivers.

Orillia may loosen background checks in an effort to get Uber and other ride sharing services to set up shop in the city.

Mayor Steve Clarke has asked staff to investigate, after getting numerous complaints about the lack of cabs, especially on weekends.

Orillia requires drivers to undergo both a criminal background check and a more stringent vulnerable sector check, while most other communities only require the criminal check.

The mayor is concerned the lack of taxis might cause someone to walk home at night when they would be better advised not to,  or drive home when they shouldn't be behind the wheel.

Clarke says the reason stated for Uber not coming to Orillia was they didn't want to be burdened by doing a vulnerable sector check
