Hanover | by Robyn Garvey

96-year-old school to close in June; massive gathering planned for May 4.

Work is well underway to make sure JDSS (John Diefenbaker Senior School) has a fitting farewell.

The 96 year old school which will close its doors for good this June and will be the site of a massive party on May 4th. (Constructed in 1923)

Councilor Dave Hocking is expecting crowds of up to 12 hundred former students, staff and friends to attend.

Hocking a former student, teacher and principal of JDSS calls the celebration bittersweet.

He says the Closing Doors Reunion is a way to celebrate the great contribution the school has made to the community over the years as well as to say a proper goodbye to a school that helped form so many students.

To mark the occasion, purple and white bows are being sold to paint the town with JDSS’s school colours.

The Closing Doors Reunion includes school tours, a dinner and a dance.

All of the musical entertainment is being donated by former students including country music star Jamie Warren.

Other musical acts include: Bonez of Contention, Exhale, Casey Shewfelt, Strange Brew, John Mighton & Family, James Skarnikat, Richared Knechtel, Al Crawford and DJ Hurricane.

Hocking says it is going to be the party of the year adding that ticket sales
are going very well.

All proceeds says Hocking, every cent raised will go to fund student related activities and equipment in the new school which is located on the east end of Hanover.

The new school which is scheduled to open its doors to students in September will house students from Grades 7 through to 12.
