Goderich | by Fadi Didi

The Algoma Niagara pulled into the Goderich Harbour around 2:50 a.m. Tuesday.

The Town of Goderich has welcomed its first ship into harbour for the warm season.

The Algoma Niagara pulled into the town's harbour around 2:50 a.m. Tuesday, with town hall officials welcoming Captain Chesley Thorne for the ritual "Top Hat" ceremony at 8:00 a.m..

Since 1932, it has become custom for town hall to offer breakfast to the first ship's captain, and have them sign a ceremonial top hat.

Chesley says he has been in-and-out of the Port of Goderich for 40 years.

Originally from Newfoundland, Chesley is nearing the end of a 45 day stretch on the Great Lakes.
