54 elementary school teachers in the Upper Grand District School Board have been issued layoff notices.
Upper Grand District School Board Communications Officer Heather Loney says 50 percent of the affected teachers are in Dufferin County, and only at the elementary level.
Board officials say it's due to a loss of revenue from the province, local priority funding that will expire in August, changes to the autism funding in Ontario and some other considerations.
The Upper Grand District School Board says it had to issue similar notices in the past but was able to recall everyone who was laid off.
Officials said they expect to have a better understanding of their financial situation with the release of provincial funding details at the end of the month.
The teachers will finish off this school year.
