Saugeen Shores Could See a New Nurse Practitioner

Saugeen Shores | by John Divinski

A Nurse Practitioner can give primary health care like physical exams, issue prescription renewals or help patients manage their chronic diseases.

It may get easier to see a VON nurse practitioner in Saugeen Shores in the future.

Saugeen Shores council learned March 25,  we only have one VON Nurse Practitioner operating in the municipality and if all goes well, a second one could be added soon.

The National Director Nurse Practitioner Professional Practice of the Victorian Order of Nurses, Shari Comerford says their current practitioner will be moving out of the Saugeen Shores Medical Clinic in Southampton.

She will continue to offer service to the 600 patients she has but the VON is looking for a new location for her with the intention of bringing on a second Nurse Practitioner.

Comerford says it will allow the VON to deal with the seasonal people who come to the area, along with the new residents who have moved into the municipality.

In an information report to council, a second practitioner "would dramatically increase the access to health care for residents and visitors alike.

A Nurse Practitioner can give primary health care like physical exams, issue prescription renewals or help patients manage their chronic diseases.

A town official believes the VON will have a place to move to by the summer and Comerford says after that, they would post for a second practitioner.

She says she's heard there are several who are interested in the position.

Meanwhile, town CAO David Smith says in his report, the town is close to hiring another full time emergency doctor for the Southampton Hospital.

No word on when that deal might be finalized.
